A Pittsburgh scavenger hunt that mails the fun to your door
The Flat Northsiders is a family Pittsburgh scavenger hunt created by the Northside | North Shore Chamber of Commerce. For $10 per family, a paper packet of clues and “flat” caricature friends arrives in your mailbox. Each clue points to a real North Side or North Shore landmark tied to a history maker who shaped the city — find the spot, hold up the matching flat Northsider, and take the picture.
How it works
Register, and the papers are mailed to you before you head out. Solve the clues in any order you want — one Saturday or spread across the year (the hunt runs through December 31, 2026). At each landmark, snap a photo with the corresponding caricature, then post it with #flatnorthsiders and tag @northsidechamberofcommerce. Note: the $10 doesn’t include admission at the few stops that charge it.
The Northsiders you’re hunting
The clues honor history makers connected to Pittsburgh’s North Side: Andy Warhol, Roberto Clemente, Art Rooney Sr., Andrew Carnegie, Rachel Carson, H.J. Heinz, Henry Buhl, George Ferris, and John & Phoebe Brashear among them. Kids get a walking history lesson; grown-ups get the “wait, THAT was a Northsider?” moments.
Who it’s for
Families hunting for things to do with kids in Pittsburgh, visiting relatives who’ve already done the museums, scout troops, birthday groups, and lifelong Pittsburghers who want to see their own neighborhood with fresh eyes. No app, no timer — paper, sneakers, and the ‘Burgh.
About the maker
The hunt comes from the Northside | North Shore Chamber of Commerce, which built it to celebrate North Side history and drive foot traffic to the neighborhood’s small businesses — the same spirit behind YinzMart. While you’re here, browse more Pittsburgh-themed items, like Duquesne Incline hand-painted earrings or a pierogi magnet for the fridge.
